Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...8/8/24 (1)

James Popik is a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist whose past projects have included popular original act, Ten Foot Tall, acts such as Venture To Zen, Supernova and a Neil Young tribute called, "Gold Rush" but it's his latest release, a self-composed work called, "The Sourland Symphony" which is garnering much well-deserved attention.

Popik has assembled an incredible cast of seasoned musicians to make this nine-song collection of instrumental offerings not only come to life but through their craftsmanship, allows listeners to go upon a sonic journey through which, if one closes their eyes, they can envision the very mountain(s) on which the music is based.

"The idea for this came from the inspirationof the landscape of the mountain; there's beautiful places in the Sourlands," says Popik. "I had been writing some material that didn't really fit in with the Jazz or the Rock bands that I was playing in. So, I decided to take those melodies, harmonic progressions and things, I took that music and arranged it for that instrumentation. There are nine tracks on the record and I got the ideas for their names; some of them are actual places in the Sourlands. Devil's Half-Acre, Woosamonsa, "Headwaters" refers to various parts at the top of the hill, Roaring Rocks is another one that is a particular place. I tried to represent, in music, what I felt about being in those different places."

"The Sourland (Symphony)' isn't a band, it's almost like a traditional Classical thing where you have a composer who says, "I'm gonna write something for a string quartet or for the piano and flute; this was music written for acoustic guitar, violin, cello, bass and percussion and there were four percussionists."

The lead track, "Green Mountain Melting" takes us on a journey of twists and turns; first, almost as if the mountain is stretching as one would when initially out of bed in the morning and yet as the track progresses, seems to be the opposite. There is a feeling of the day winding down as The Sourlands become awash with color from one of their many beautiful sunsets as Winter snows fade into the soil. Either way, those feelings are easily absorbed, making this a great opening number.

"West Mountain"is an upbeat piece featuring fantastic call and answer trade-offs between Popik and Stratospheerius as well as current Kansas violinist Joe Deninzon. Here too, if one closes their eyes, a trek up the mountain seems accomplished with some, "Pep in your step."

Track three is the aforementioned, "Headwaters" with it's percussive,Tabla drum feel and sound as well as staccato sections of guitar and cello, along with well-placed cymbal crashes is aggressively soothing yet just raucous enough to get the blood pumping and a definite highlight piece.

"Shagbark Shuffle" is just that; a shuffle. Named after the Shagbark tree which is prominent in The Sourlands, whose bark falls off in strips and always seems to be peeling away from its trunk, the "Shagbark Shuffle" shuffles along with some giddyup and a bright demeanor that compliments its players and Popik'svision of what the tree is, in actuality."

Popik took his time analyzing the mountain and each composition reflects not only his patience but also the landscape's various seasons and times. "Southside Spring" with its deliberate start, gives way to a burst of energy, then mid-way through this eight minute and seven second piece eases into a gentle rainfall and is a great step by step recount of how nature wakes from its long winter slumber only to be reborn by melting snows and fresh growth during its transformation."

"Woosamonsa Valley" has a Bossanova feel which yields to a searing violin solo followedby a wonderful jazz infused guitar solo; the percussion, which is mixed perfectly just below the radar provides the drive and nuance that really allows this track to pulse.

"Roaring Rocks" with its haunting cello and bellicose, almost Flamingo style percussion lives up to its name; there is nothing shy about this offering as it grabs your attention, much like the Sourlands; immediately.

"Threnody For The Ash," like the currently distressed Ash trees, seems to be somewhat of a cool-down piece, similar to a post aria operatic movement seemingly acting like a bridge to a destination's end. Recently, the Ash trees in The Sourlands have been decimated by the Ash Borer Beetle and Popik captures the struggle within the ecosystem perfectly withthis composition.

Wrapping up this magnificent story is a trip through "Devil's Half-Acre Blues," a section of the region that Popik describes as "Forbidding" and "Haunted," something he conveys very well with the utilization of dissonant chords, plucking violin, eerie knocks and threatening noises blended into a perfect cacophony."

"The Sourland Symphony" is a fantastic instrumental collection, well written and performed and with its diverse styles is a must add to any music collection but the question remains; was the composer happy with his work?

Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...8/8/24 (2)

"Definitely," says Popik, "Because I was able to do things that I wasn't able to do in those other settings and the musicians that I got for it added to that and it really came out great; I'm very happy with it and there will be vinyl will be out in September and it's a four-sided, two disc vinyl; I'm looking forward to that because it's gonna be a special thing. I also look forward to a record release for it; most likely in December."
